Realpolitiks
(2017, Poland)

Language: English

Realpolitiks simulates the global politics in modern times or in the future scenarios. You are put in charge of a country of your own choice and given all the tools you need to keep your economy afloat and your citizens happy. Apart from the internal affairs, a lot of your decisions will include other countries, including your neighbours, which means you need to keep the balance between being on the good side of the global players as well as the local pacts and unions.

The simulated world contains all of the countries, the bigger ones are also split into regions, which means you have to manage the local crises as well as the countrywide problems. And that is where you need a good, well-designed interface to help you with those tasks, unfortunately Realpolitiks have none of that. Just like in cases of similar titles (like Supreme Ruler) The world map, which is most of the time completely useless, covers about 90% of your screen, while any sort of user interface consists of small frames tacked away at the borders of the screen.

To make things even more tricky, all the elements of the interface displayed over the map are quite small, so it could be hard to find the data that you actually need at the moment. Another not that idea was to make the map and the interface really colourful, which means it is even harder to find what you are looking for because your eyes will struggle to find the details among hundreds of other details on the screen.

And those elements put off some of the users from digging deeper into the gameplay because when you know what you want to do, but struggle to do it because you cannot find the correct icon or the data you need, it makes the gameplay completely irrelevant. And to be fair, the gameplay is not that great either. When you get used to the troublesome interface, you will realize that all the decisions you can make are rather shallow. You can create projects that will improve your country, but it is made in a form of a tree, where you need to "invent" f.e. industrial production level 1, so you can invent industrial production level 2. All of it is on quite abstract level and influences only your global parameters, like monthly income, instead of digging deeper into the structure of your economy.

Also, the diplomacy and war are done with minimal effort - f.e. you "improve" relationships with some country by clicking on the button and not through some chain of activities. The war is even less involving - all you do is send troops and choose one of not very imaginative options on how to proceed.

Overall, Realpolitiks is a rather shallow and uninteresting game, even if you can look past the horrible user interface, which is not an easy task indeed.
