As a leader of a small tribe in 4000 BC, you start your journey from nomadic existence to an established empire capable of space flights. With only a handful of settlers and some basic technology you can find a suitable place to start your first city and from that point everything else is down to your decisions. The world map is generated each time, which means that you have the whole planet waiting to be discovered, but keep in mind that you are not alone. There are other tribes somewhere and their goal is exactly the same - explore, expand, exploit, exterminate - hence the 4X genre of the games.
While concentrating on the providing food for your citizens and building an army capable of defending your cities, you also have to take care of the progress in other fields, like knowledge, technology, exploration, improvement of infrastructure and finally the political and diplomatic ways to control your empire. And when the times comes, you will have to face them on the battlefield, because the goal of the game is to dominate the whole world and to be the civilization that will survive.
Sid Meier’s Civilization was the most influential strategy games of 1990s, it introduced a lot of elements that are now standards in 4X or grand strategy games, like time management, supplies management, technology trees and many more. The political and diplomatic sides of the game were perhaps not as important as other branches of the progress, but still the game made a huge impact on the genre.
