A ghostwriter is brought to Rhinehart publishing company and offered a job on a project with some potential - memoirs of a former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang. Or, to be exact, he is hired to take over the project after Mike McAra drowned while working on the book. He is flown to Martha’s Vineyard, where Lang lives together with his wife and closest staff members. The secluded place, full of security agents, barren coast of the Atlantic Ocean, sleepy little town nearby, all of it creates a unique atmosphere of isolation from the world. But the storm is brewing and soon the name of Adam Lang hits the news for unsuspecting reasons - he is accused of illegal involvement of British soldiers in an anti-terror operation that detained British citizens of Middle East origin, who were later tortured. The atmosphere around the former Prime Minister begins to thicken, but the ghostwriter stumbles upon a different kind of problem - he begins to suspect that the death of Mike McAra was not completely accidental. While he tries to find out the details of that drowning, he notices that different powers could be in play...

Mystery movie with strong political undertones - former politician, suspicious death, tense atmosphere in a secluded place. All of those elements should have made The Ghost Writer a film to remember, but the final product is far from being perfect. The gloomy atmosphere is there, but still the story seems very clinical, the mystery is there, but it seems superficial, the ending is there, yet it could be disappointing. Overall an interesting look behind the scenes of politics, the film is a decent piece of cinema, yet leaves the viewer without a reward.
