In 2000, the Russian Northern Fleet prepares for an exercise in the Barents Sea, beyond the polar circle. Since the end of Cold War, the navy was constantly underfunded and the maintenance of the ships became optional. Admiral Grudzinsky, commander of the Northern Fleet, has no illusions that his task force is far cry from what it once used to be, but he is not prepared for what will become next. Among the ships taking part in the exercise is an Oscar-class nuclear submarine, Kursk. Soon after leaving the port, their weapons officer reports that the test torpedo stored aboard is heating up. At first, his reports are ignored, since the elevated temperature is still within the safe range, but this is about to change quickly. A single explosion tears the hull of the Kursk just a moment before the series of further explosions of live torpedoes, which breaks the submarine into pieces. A group of the sailors survived in the aft part of the hull, but they have no way of escaping. All they can do is wait for the Northern Fleet to come to their rescue. But the Northern Fleet does not even know they are missing, once they learned about the explosion, it was quickly determined that no one could survive...

A movie based on real events that took place in 2000, when Russian submarine Kursk went down due to an explosion aboard. The background of the story is shown in scarce manner, the plot concentrates on the fate of the survivors aboard Kursk, but the context is seen quite clearly. For a few days, Russia was refusing to accept foreign help, sacrificing the survivors in order to keep the secrets of their submarines intact. The film is good enough, showing the human angle of the whole story, but also highlights how little has changed in the mentality of Russia after the collapse of Soviet Union.
