Former Prime Minister of Italy, Aldo Moro, is a leader of Christian Democracy party, attempts to form a government of national unity with the support of the Italian Communist Party, which causes a lot of disturbance in the media and in the parliament itself. It would the first time that a NATO country would have communists involved in the government, which is unthinkable in the middle of Cold War with constant danger from the Soviet Union. Different factions within the parliament try to stop Moro from succeeding, but for him this is the way ahead for the political scene in his homeland. In March 1978 an armed group attacks the convoy in which Moro is being driven home, his bodyguards are killed, and he is kidnapped. The Red Brigades, a far-left militant group, is taking responsibility for this action and demands a huge ransom for the release of the politician. While the whole society seems to be outraged by this horrifying act, the Italian government is sticking to its policy there would be no negotiations with the terrorists so they would not be encouraged to repeat such attacks. The Pope, Paul VI, gets involved, hoping to work out the release of Moro, he even is prepared to pay the ransom.

Italian miniseries (also cut into a 2-part version) telling the true story of kidnapping of Aldo Moro and, sometimes, fictitious events that took place in the case. Each of the six episodes in the miniseries presented a different side of the chain of events - from Aldo Moro’s perspective, from the minister in charge of the investigation, the Pope, the kidnappers and Moro’s wife, Eleonora Chiavarelli. It is an interesting study in what might happen when the extremists will clash with the ossified and divided world of politics, where individuals made little effort to resolve the problem, just tried to look busy and concerned. The long version (6 episodes) contains more details, although in some points it was too much content without meaningful impact on the main storyline.
